Denver Colorado

Lived in Denver for a few years when I was growing up in the early 60s Had never seen snow before and we landed in snowstorm after diverting to Colorado Springs. Went to three different schools in three years before we moved back to Florida. Fell on icy sidewalks a few times on the way to school. Trying ice skating for the first time was another memorable event, such as falling on the ice and having a tough time getting up.

Drove a round-trip to Denver from Kansas City where I was living in 1981 in an Opel stick-shift

Returned for a visit in 2018, staying there for a week. Took public transportation the entire time I was there in Denver Colorado. Stayed at a budget hotel with at least two bus lines across the street near Speer Boulevard. Only took less than 15 minutes to get to downtown from my hotel.

The Downtown Denver bus depot is directly across from the state capitol. Frequent buses depart for Boulder about 30 miles northwest, home to the University of Colorado.

About a block away from the bus depot is the 16th Street Mall. There is a free bus that runs constantly along the 16th Street Mall, a welcome rest for tired feet. At the opposite end of the 16th Street Mall is Union Station, from where the light rail and Amtrak depart. The light rail system reaches west to the city of Golden, home of Coors Beer.

Denver International Airport connects to downtown via light rail. DIA is far west of town in the middle of a huge prairie. The old Stapleton Airport where my father worked was much closer to downtown, and all airport hotels are still there.
